‘Artwork by Misslyka’
During WWII, Winston Churchill was asked to cut arts funding in favour of the war effort, he simply replied, ‘Then what are we fighting for?’ It’s a shame that that turned out to be false news. He never said it. Even so, it’s a great line for the current crisis in the world of art and fits like a glove for all the art genres suffering because of the worldwide lockdown right now. At times like this it seems art and artists are playing second fiddle to the invisible zombie infection we’re living through.
Musicians are a good example. With the music industry dead in the water because of the corona virus lockdown and my rainy day alternative businesses being dependent on being in places where crowds once gathered but are now closed down, I’m thinking what’s the point? Then again, I keep telling myself that dark days ought to be creative days. The two go hand in hand. Maybe that’ll work for me soon. I’m hoping it will simply because when composing I never think about money, or, as of now, a lack of it.
I’m also hoping all artists of all genres hang in there best they can. Bad times arrived too soon and will last too long.
The year of corona, the year of the rat
Just like in the Black Death, check out the stat
Selfishness, stupidity and greed we combat
A pity we can’t rename this year, the year of the cat
2021 the year of the ox
The dead now all scattered or in some wooden box
The rebirth of music, musicians, no more shocks
We’ll sing our hearts out for anything, anything that rocks
I guess my song ‘What Remains’ fits the mood today. It’s from my ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’ album. I hope you enjoy;

Lord Zoo, I know it’s been a hard year so far, you really must stop speaking of Bojo or is it Dominic Cummings like this….

I hadn’t thought of that, Shey. But you’re right. Even though it is genuinely the year of the rat, ‘rat’ is the right word for Cummings. He’s more like a bloke from a TV satire/comedy more than he’s real. He’s the type of human I truly hate ~ George

I like the song “The Pigeons are Switzerland” 🙂 But even more the lyrics further above The Year of the Rat, I laughed a lot.

This is the kind of year that gives rats a bad name
Oddly enough the Covid-19 virus apparently came from bats and mutated to be able to infect humans. Rats. Bats. Stay well my friend.

Lord Zoo…LOL! I wish I understood the above references…Cummings…Bojo… Not a clue.
Thoroughly enjoyed the lyrics and the music. I hope things lighten up on all of us, soon.

Thanks for listening. Bojo is Boris Johnson the UK Prime Minister, Cummings is his unelected advisor. The both of them are right wing idiots, liars and are the ones who, with the votes of morons and racists, took us out of the EU. I can’t stand either of them ~ George

Sing it low, perhaps in D flat
In Wuhan it’s surely the year of the bat
Hoping all of us songwriters are still here writing in the months to come.

Hi George. How are you all keeping? Hope all is well. Sorry for being absent. It is a long story, and I have a hard time reading and commenting these days.
Music industry are the best! I am listening to an opera every day, concerts and musicals on weekends. It keeps me going.
Stay safe. I know the art is immortal, but we humans have to take care of ourselves. x

Thanks, Inese. I hope all will be well. The lockdown really has killed the music industry…even the bands that used to play in pubs at the weekends have lost their gigs. It’s a difficult time when business in quiet. It seems to kill creativity to an extent. Even, say, new TV shows aren’t being made, hence they don’t need music. Netflix is making a fortune right now but they have said their income will drop soon as no one is making new movies because of the virus. I’m hoping they find a cure soon. Your right though, we do have to take care of ourselves and stay indoors. It’s good to hear from you again. Best wishes ~ George

Thank you, George. I am afraid it is not the last virus in our life. Sure someone will come up with ideas about doing the business in these new conditions. You are so right about creativity – there is little for her to feed on. But the day will come 🙂
Best wishes to you all.
