‘Etaples Military Cemetery, Northern France’ – 5 years ago

Nothing comes for free in times of war
You even have to pay for an unmarked grave
Don’t know your name but I can’t ignore
The price you paid for the life you gave

  1. Do they really have to pay for the tombs? I can understand it here in Spain since most of the population doesn’t know they have an army that actually has soldiers doing what soldiers do, people here think we are some kind of NGO, so there is no great military cemeteries for my generation and the current one, but in France?
It´s at the same time beautiful and sad to see that photo, mixed emotions. I thought adding that piano theme was perfectly suited for the photo and poem which very well written and powerful.

    1. I think France and Belgium have by far the most military cemeteries because they were the battleground for WW1 and WW2. I’ve visited loads of them. The pic of this one doesn’t do the place justice. You’d need a wide angle or overhead view to see it all. It’s a place I’ll never forget. I’m glad at last to have a home for that piece of music. Thanks ~ George

    1. Thanks. Across Northern France the army out of the Lille Barracks take great care of the British graves. They tidy up each week to keep them spot on. It’s a great shame you’re not getting that service. Thanks again ~ George

      1. Its Vermont, an old cemetery and probably before it was PC. My husband’s in Colorado is a nice nameplate with symbols but here US the Anerican Legion puts mini flags on the graves on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. The huge fields of graves in Europe are sad to see.

      2. If you asked me exactly ‘why’? I couldn’t tell you. But for more reasons than I can count I believe it important to keep the graves spotless. The biggest battle I’ve ever fought is re-stringing my guitars – that’s a nothing – zero – irrelevant – compared to what the defenders of freedom fought. Vermont needs to get its act together. Thanks for that ~ George
