For reasons I can’t explain I was wondering if mushrooms would grow on Mars. I never did work it out. Probably they don’t, but thinking about Mars I remembered this song I wrote. It’s one of my earlier ones. I last put it on the blog when I started with WP back in late 2016. Since then it’s been curated. It’s never appeared on any of my albums as yet but still gets streamed a lot. Here’s the song and the lyrics so you can sing along if you want. I hope you enjoy;
RED PLANET
Red planet take good care of me
Make it better than before
I’m tired of what we’re doing here
Just show me the door
I think I’ll take that flight – I’ll take that flight to Mars
I’ll leave this Earth behind, won’t even wave goodbye
I know there’s no coming back
Why would I anyway?
There’s nothing left here I want
I know there’s no coming back
Why would I anyway?
There’s nothing left to say
Red planet take good care of me
Make it better than before
I’m tired of what we’re doing here
Just show me the door
I know there’s no coming back
Why would I anyway?
The end game now is playing out
I know there’s no coming back
Why would I anyway?
Here time is running out
On Mars the wind blows hot and cold
On Mars there is no war
On Mars I’ll never have to ask
“What are we fighting for?”
Red planet take good care of me
Make it better than before
I’m tired of what we’re doing here
Just show me the door
Sometime in the future
I might look up to the sky
Back at where I came from
At a planet cold and dry
I think I’ll take that flight; I’ll take that flight to Mars

I really like your voice in “Red Planet”. It’s a really nice escape song; however, it doesn’t conjure up mushroom how I imagine them on Mars. In my imagination I see giant mushrooms on Mars, standing like a forrest, psychedelic in glowing blacklight colors with Iron Butterflies, Strawberry Alarm Clocks and Yellow Submarines. Which brings to mind the question: what about music on mars? How would it sound? I imagine pretty much the same, but definitely subsonic as compared to earth, given that sound should travel much slower in the thin, cold Martian atmosphere than it does on earth. We might have to crank up the bass a bit on Mars.

Thanks for that. Interesting. Strings and woodwind feel like they might work. Certainly nothing electronic. I’m guessing distinct sound carries there. I could turn the whole planet into one sound art installation – if it isn’t one already. Single drums -all kinds independently – for mood and echoes? You’ve got me thinking here ~ George

I doubt they do grow there, needing dark and humid conditions, but hey, you never know what’s under the surface! A sad song I think….

Thanks. Mushrooms on Mars is likely a non-starter. I agree. The song is sad, you’re right. I get fed up with what we are doing to Earth. Thanks again ~ George

Thanks, Ka. I agree, looking back at older stuff is a good feeling – although most time it makes me feel like I could do it so much better in ‘the now’. Thanks again ~ George

Thanks, Lady Yasmin. It’s nice sometimes to revisit numbers I wrote at the start – especially one about Planet Earth falling apart ~ George

Terrific song and lyrics, Zoolon. I know Mars is the “Red Planet,” but I hope the mushrooms there are blue. 🙂 Oh… now I’m imagining blues mushrooms. A blue mushroom devil at the cross roads… They call it mushroom Monday, but Tuesday’s just as bad…
LOL hugs!

Thanks, Teagan. Maybe the mushroom’s could all have skateboards as well. Neat. Thanks again ~ Zoolon aka George

Ah… synchronized skateboarding– and sunglasses. I think they’ll need those on Mars. 😎🕴🕶 😎

Hey George,
a wonderful sad song with a very important question…think we have to find out everything about life on mars because when we go on living on earth the way we do today…we probably need a second earth….Best, Jürgen

Thanks, Juergen. A bit of oxygen there might do the trick. I think I can cope with weightlessness ~ George

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s asked, but have you ever seen the original Total Recall? Your post made me think of the colony on Mars…well, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s head blowing up. I also remember something about Chinese astronauts are experimenting with growing food on the moon…? Pretty sure I’m not making that up. ANYway.
Carry on with your creative fire, Sir. 🙂 xxxxx

I think I got this lyric idea from the news. It was about 4 years ago. They were saying that one day the objective was to start a colony on Mars, then with Earth being killed by mankind I thought it a good idea to write a song based on that ~ George

Considering how we are these days, we better get working on that colonizing technology. x
